Kata was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma (cancer of the nervous system) in April 2007
and is currently in the Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town where she is awaiting a bone marrow
transplant which will cost R 500 000.
The Byleveld family do not have medical aid and any contributions would be a great help.

Kata Byleveld may have been only five years old when she lost the fight against cancer on Sunday, 30 March 2008, but in her short life this courageous little girl taught residents of Oudtshoorn, neighbouring towns and throughout the province important life lessons.
Firstly, she taught us about courage, bravery and to keep on smiling even in a life threatening
situation. Secondly, she taught us about joining hands and standing together.

Kata Byleveld (5) passed away about 11 o'clock on Sunday morning at her parents' home in Oudtshoorn.
She was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in May 2007 and received a bonemarrow transplant in
November. She had made such good progress that her parents applied for a place in Wesbank
Primary's gr. R class, which she would have joined in July this year.

Kata's bloodcount has fallen, and the dr. did some test. It shows that the Parvo Virus is present in her blood.She had it a previous time, so they decided that they are going to give her the same treatment as before. Kata is getting radiotherapy while she is getting the treatment at Red Cross, so she is real tired.
The week after the radioterepy we had to stay in Cape Town, just in case she gets ill.
The 18 of January, Kata's bloodcount looks good, so she could go home till the 28th of
January
28 January we are back at the Red Cross, and she is starting with oral chemo.
Her bloodtests is good, so the dr. said it looks like her body is rid of the virus.
He also did some chemical test, and it shows that her liver and kidneys are working 100 %.
The tests also shows that her bonemarrow is working 80 %, and that is good news !!!!!!!!.

KATA CAME OUT OF GROOTE SCHUUR HOSPITAL ON THE 08/12/07 . AFTER HER BONEMARROW TRANSPLANT. SHE SPENT HER 5TH BIRTH DAY IN ISOLATION IN THE HOSPITAL, WITH THE PROMISE THAT SHE CAN HAVE A BIG ONE WHEN SHE IS HEALTHY.
ALL THE SIGNS ARE LOOKING GOOD THAT THE BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT WAS SUCCESSFUL. THE FIRST EIGHT
DAYS SHE RECEIVED INTENSIVE CHEMOTHERAPY OBLITERATED HER EXISTING BONEMARROW AND AFTER THAT THEY
INTRODUCED THE NEW BONEMARROW INTO HER SYSTEM.

KATA WAS ADMITTED TO GROOTESCHUUR PRIVATE ON 11/11/07 FOR HER BONEMARROW TRANSPLANT.
SHE IS IN TOTAL ISOLATION WITH SPECIAL AIR FLOW TO HER ROOM SO THAT POSSIBLE GERMS CAN BE
ELIMINATED. EVERY THING GETS MONITORED 24 HOURS PER DAY, WITH BLOOD TESTS, BEING DONE
EVERYDAY. THERE IS ALSO A 24 HOURS NURSE LOOKING AFTER HER.

THE OPERATION WAS A GREAT SUCCESS. IT WAS DONE AT RED CROSS HOSPITAL. THE DOCTORS HAD TO TAKE ALL THE TUMOURS FROM HER VEINS AND KIDNEY. OPERATION WAS 8 HOURS.
LUCKY SHE COULD KEEP HER RIGHT KIDNEY AFTER THE MARATHON OPERATION. KATA WAS 2 DAYS IN ICU,
AND 7 DAYS IN HIGH CARE. BACK HOME AFTER THAT.
